Dominican Students To Participate In CUT Games

When the 13th Edition of the Caribbean Union of Teachers Track and Field Championships rolls open in St. Kitts later this week, Dominica’s National Flag will be seen flying high for the first time in the history of the games.

Dominica will for the first time participate in the Caribbean Union of Teachers Track and Field Championships. An eighteen member team will join Mrs. Celia Nicholas and Miss Isabella Prentice from the Dominica Association of Teachers who are already in St. Kitts for the Caribbean Union of Teachers Executive Meeting. The Team includes Estaphania Pascal, Kerdisha Royer, Emerly John, Orie Baron, and Derick St. Jean from the Dominica Grammar School, Nicole Paris, Noah Bethelamie, Ajani Reefe, Desmond Boney and Stephan Telemaque, from the North East Comprehensive School, Jernel Phillip and Chelsea Lawrence from the Wesley Primary School, Luan Gabriel from the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, Anisha Burton from the Concord Primary School, and Deon Burton from the Atkinson Primary School. Leading the team is Mr. Julian Lloyd Benjamin who will serve as Chef De Mission/Manager. Also accompanying the Team are coaches Mr. Smith Telemaque – Head Coach and Miss Rhona Daniel – Assistant Coach.

The Team just concluded a two day training camp in Dublanc and is ready to capture Gold in St. Kitts.
The games which are carded for July 23 – 26, 2010 will take place at the Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium in Basseterre, St. Kitts. The event is organized under the auspices of the Caribbean Union of Teachers and is hosted by the St. Kitts Teachers’ Union.

The Games have been a breeding ground for some of the Caribbean’s most outstanding Track and Field athletes. Many have moved on to the CAC Age Group Championships, the CAC Juniors, the CARIFTA Games, the CAC Senior Championships, the Pan American Games and, of course, the Olympic Games. From these games we can mention such Track and Field athletes as Veronica Campbell Brown of Jamaica and Obadele Thompson of Barbados. Who knows, from this group of Dominican athletes the Caribbean's next Usain Bolt may emerge.
